Product Description
November 1950, the Korean Peninsula: After General MacArthur ignores Mao’s warnings and pushes his UN forces deep into North Korea, his 10,000 First Division Marines find themselves surrounded and hopelessly outnumbered by 100,000 Chinese soldiers near the Chosin Reservoir. Their only chance for survival is to fight their way south through the Toktong Pass, a narrow gorge that will need to be held open at all costs. The mission is handed to Captain William Barber and the 234 Marines of Fox Company, a courageous but undermanned unit of the First Marines. Barber and his men climb seven miles of frozen terrain to a rocky promontory overlooking the pass, where they will endure four days and five nights of nearly continuous Chinese attempts to take Fox Hill. Amid the relentless violence, three-quarters of Fox’s Marines are killed, wounded, or captured. Just when it looks like they will be overrun, Lt. Colonel Raymond Davis, a fearless Marine officer who is fighting south from Chosin, volunteers to lead a daring mission that will seek to cut a hole in the Chinese lines and relieve the men of Fox. This is a fast-paced and gripping account of heroism in the face of impossible odds.

5 out of 5 stars Thank You Korean War Veterans!   June 8, 2010

I have heard it said that our conflict in Korea is a "Forgotten War". Books like this are essential to keep that from happening.

This audio book is for adults - a gritty telling of marines in combat - parents use your brain cells - violence and foul language are front and center, so you may want to consider little ears that may be listening.

Drury and Clavin put you right in the middle of the stress, cold, fatigue, frustration, bravery, anger, fear, black humor, and heroism that charge combat with primal energy.

Michael Prichard's voice is a really good fit for this story. He has that no-nonsense leathery tone - sort of reminds me of a darker gravely version of Paul Harvey.

If you want a deeper appreciation of the kind of sacrifices American warriors make, and get a sense of the courage that beats in the heart of Marines - buy this one.

Read other books on Korean "conflict" and this is an outstanding insight in some of what our warriors endure.
I was deployed to Korea just after USS Pueblo, "incident". My first exposure to Yellow Sea cold and winds.
I could not imagine combat in those conditions and this book was placed far North of my location.
Thanks to the troops and to authors for bringing this to light.

5 out of 5 stars Great Story about Great Marines Just Doing Their Job   April 25, 2010

I read this book upon the recommendation of my friend who knew that I had been an Officer of Marines. I had heard lots of stories from Marines who served in Korea as well as reading other books describing the efforts of the Marine Corps; historical, tactical, and novels, many by the late James Brady.

But this book details the suffering undergone by the Marines of Fox Company in the most cruel and harshest conditions in which I think that Marines have ever fought.

It is a good lesson on what our soldiers and Marines would face today if we were to have a throw down with either the North Koreans or the Chinese.

But, the most amazing part was reading about my eighth grade teacher, a platoon leader in Fox Company and recipient of four Purple Hearts and a Silver Star. Facts which I never knew about the quiet guy who was a great teacher and role model. He went off to war ,did his job and came home and resumed just doing his job, only telling us that "once you are a Marine, you are always a Marine and you always take care of each other." That's all he ever said. That's all that he ever needed to say.

A great book to read in the winter, because when you think its cold, it in no way equates to the cold endured by the Marines of Fox Company plus add about 10,000 of the enemy trying to kill you. You'll snuggle up and appreciate their heroic efforts even more.

What a gem of a book.Straight forward commentary that reads like a novel except this was true. Originally bought it for my Kindle but couldn't see the maps & diagrams so I bought a Hard cover version to see where each Marines fox hole was located which is crucial to understanding the battle. A real testamount to the American Marines fighting ability.Best read when it's cold outside to feel 1/100 of how hard it is to fight in cold weather.

An oustanding read that makes you feel like you're right there with the embattled Marines fighting the elements and the enemy.
